Government Announces $102.6 Million Plan After Anti-Semitic Attacks in Dover Heights
In the early hours of Friday, January 17, 2025, Sydney’s Dover Heights—a suburb with a significant Jewish population—was the scene of a disturbing anti-Semitic attack. Vandals set fire to multiple vehicles and defaced a residence with red paint. The targeted home formerly belonged to Alex Ryvchin, co-chief executive of the Executive Council of Australian Jewry.

ToggleGovernment and Community Leaders Condemn the Violence
New South Wales Premier Chris Minns condemned the perpetrators, describing them as “animals” with “hate-filled hearts. He emphasised that such “horrifying anti-Semitic attacks” are “truly disgusting” and promised to improve regulations to safeguard houses of worship and combat incitement to hatred.
Alex Ryvchin called the attackers “terrorists,” and urged all Australians to send such tolerance. He warned that if the increasing anti-Semitism is not handled soon, it could result in fatalities.
Intervention-Centric Action Plan Unveiled
Home Affairs Minister Tony Burke unveiled the $102.6 million intervention-focused plan in Melbourne on Friday. Speaking to reporters, he emphasised the fast-changing nature of radicalisation, particularly among young Australians.
“We are increasingly finding people where it is no longer a set ideology, be it what would be viewed as an extremist ideology purporting to be based on faith or what would be described as a right-wing, racist ideology,” Mr. Burke said.
“It is now as well mixed ideologies as part of these rapid forms of radicalization. That has meant that as the threat level has evolved, the government’s response needs to evolve as well.”
Core Elements of the Strategy
At the heart of the plan is a national support and intervention program aimed at identifying and addressing early signs of radicalization. Key initiatives include:
A nationwide rollout of New South Wales’ Step Together program, which provides support to individuals concerned about someone exhibiting signs of radicalization.
A four-year budget allocation of $102.6 million to fund these initiatives.
Anti-Semitic Attacks Fuel Urgency
The announcement comes as law enforcement investigates another anti-Semitic attack in Sydney. Two cars in the Dover Heights suburb were set ablaze, defaced with anti-Semitic slurs such as “f*** Jews” and “f*** Israel.” A nearby house was also vandalized with paint.
Sources confirm that the targeted property was recently owned by Jewish community leader Alex Ryvchin. This incident adds to a growing list of anti-Semitic crimes targeting private properties and synagogues in Sydney and Melbourne.
Operation Avalite and Stronger Penalties
In response to these incidents, the government of Albanese started Operation Avalite, a task team made by the Federal Police that aims to combat anti-Semitic incidents.
Mr. Burke strongly condemned the recent attack, stating:
“I unequivocally condemn the crimes that have been committed overnight. As we saw yesterday with the first charges under Operation Avalite, people engaging in these hate crimes must understand that this is not mere graffiti; it’s a hate crime with serious criminal penalties.”
The minister assured that the government’s best agencies are working diligently to apprehend offenders and enforce strict penalties.
Calls for a National Summit
Allegra Spender, an independent MP representing Dover Heights, wants Prime Minister Anthony Albanese to hold a national cabinet meeting to address the rise in anti-Semitism. She pointed out the need for an emerging national solution to this situation.
In a post on X (formerly Twitter), Ms Spender praised the appointment of an Antisemitism Envoy and highlighted the need to act on her recommendations.
“It is time to convene National Cabinet and treat the surge in antisemitism like the crisis it is,” she wrote.
Ms. Spender called for changes in policing, prison law, and education to communicate that such acts are not allowed.
Conclusion
The Albanese government’s strong steps indicate its commitment to combating violent extremism as well as solving the rise in anti-Semitic attacks. The government intends to protect communities and strengthen Australia’s position on hate crimes by investing significant cash to carry out a well-executed
