Steve Smith Retires from ODI Cricket After Champions Trophy Semifinal Loss to India

Australian cricketer Steve Smith has announced his retirement from One Day International (ODI) cricket following Australia’s semifinal defeat to India in the ICC Champions Trophy. Smith, 35, informed his teammates of his decision immediately after the four-wicket loss.
Over a distinguished ODI career spanning 170 matches, Smith amassed 5,800 runs at an average of 43.28, including 12 centuries and 35 half-centuries. He was a pivotal figure in Australia’s World Cup victories in 2015 and 2023. Reflecting on his journey, Smith stated, “It has been a great ride and I have loved every minute of it. There have been so many amazing times and wonderful memories. Winning two World Cups was a great highlight along with the many fantastic teammates who shared the journey.”

Despite stepping away from the 50-over format, Smith remains committed to Test cricket and is available for Twenty20 Internationals. He expressed enthusiasm for upcoming Test series, including the World Test Championship Final and tours against the West Indies and England. Todd Greenberg, the CEO of Cricket Australia, praised Smith’s work and pointed out his leadership and steady performance. He also said that Smith’s presence would continue to help the Test and T20 teams.
