Threats to Landmarks and Local Infrastructure
The fast expansion of the Malibu fire drove flames perilously near the famous Pacific Coast Highway and the old Malibu Pier. With almost 3,000 students, Pepperdine University followed shelter-in-place rules as flames tore across adjacent canyons. Seeking cover in the university library, students negotiated heavy smoke and ash.
Outages of Power and Preventive Measures
Southern California Edison switched off power to roughly 40,000 customers prematurely in order to lower the risk of wildfires connected to high winds. Monday night was when most disruptions occurred, according to Edison representative Gabriela Ornelas. This safety measure is based on lessons learnt from the terrible 2018 Woolsey Fire, which lost three lives and destroyed 1,600 houses and was linked to Edison equipment.
Community Resilience In Times of Disaster
Although Malibu is usually connected with its wealthy celebrity residents, middle-class and working-class families, ranchers, and farmers have suffered much from the fire. Kasey Earnest, executive director of the Boys and Girls Club of Malibu, highlighted their plight, describing them as the “heart of Malibu.” “They’re just normal families — nobody’s landing a helicopter on their property,” Earnest said, underscoring the diverse makeup of the Malibu community.
