Iconic Australian Radio and TV Host Philip Brady Passes Away at 85 After Cancer Battle
Philip Brady, an Australian media personality and radio host, died at the age of 85 after a short fight with cancer. Brady was diagnosed on December 5, 2024, and he continued to communicate with friends and share experiences during his treatment. He formally resigned from his post at Melbourne’s 3AW on February 2, 2025, capping up a record 67-year career in broadcasting.
Brady started his career in 1958 as a booth announcer for GTV 9, where he worked with renowned people such as Graham Kennedy, Bert Newton, and Steve Vizard. He began working as a weekend disc jockey on 3AW in 1971 and subsequently rose to become a popular talkback show. He was best known for co-hosting the shows “Remember When” and “Nightline” with Bruce Mansfield. Following Mansfield’s death in 2016, Simon Owens joined Brady to continue the show’s legacy.
Brady received the Order of Australia Medal (OAM) in 2018 for his excellent contributions to the broadcasting industry. He was a long-time supporter of the Epilepsy Foundation of Victoria and an Australia Day ambassador.
A Heartfelt Farewell
Reflecting on his retirement, Brady noted in a recorded message delivered to listeners on February 2, 2025, “After 67 years in the profession, I’m departing, and I’m extremely sad to be leaving you. It’s time to move over and give the younger guys a go.”
