Sydney’s St Marys Recycling Plant Engulfed in Flames, 800m Exclusion Zone Set Up
A significant fire erupted at a commercial recycling plant in St Marys, Sydney, on Tuesday, February 4, 2025, shortly after 1:45 PM. Over 100 firefighters, supported by 20 fire trucks, responded to reports of a substantial blaze accompanied by explosions and thick black smoke visible from the site on Christie Street.
Very high flames were reported up to 60 meters upon the arrival of firefighters. Evacuations were initiated and an 800-meter exclusion zone was declared upon the intensification of continuing explosions and hazardous chemicals which rendered the operation dangerous and complicated.
Hazardous Materials crews are actively working to contain the fire and protect adjourning properties. Residents and businesses outside the exclusion zone are advised to keep doors, windows, and vents closed to minimize exposure to possible smoke. The public is asked not to go into the area.
This is the most recent in a series of fires at the same plant. In November 2022, a fire threatened to destroy the chemical recycling factory, and more than 50 firefighters and 12 vehicles battled the blaze. The cause of the fire was not investigated.
The exact cause of the current fire is unknown at this time. Fire and Rescue NSW will provide updates as the situation evolves.
